Science meets fashion
Founded in 1999, Bodymedia is the OG wearables company. Their original devices were designed for use in clinical settings to monitor patient data related obesity and diabetes. In 2010, I led a team at Lunar to help Bodymedia develop a more fashion-forward design language to compete with new competitors like Jawbone and Fitbit.
One of the key challenges in the new design language was working around the size of Bodymedia’s devices. Their devices were capable of providing people with far more data than their competitor’s glorified pedometers. But with all of that data came a larger sized device. Inspired by sports related jewelry, like tennis bracelets, we helped Bodymedia create a design language that was both sophisticated and visually slimming to their hardware. The goal being, to create something that looked as good in the gym as it did on the job.
As a result of this project Bodymedia was acquired by Jawbone in 2013 for $100M.
